I've used mini super-stones, they work very well for smoothing out. If you want to smooth out rough carving start with the 120 and progress through the grits if you want a high polish without losing the detail of your carving. If you just want it smooth to texture or burnish the surface you'll need to experiment. To start with Nickel sized work I'd get .5 mm stones, you can use 'Pentel' .7 mechanical pencils to hold the .5 mm stone. I get my stones from artcotools.com.
