Lonestarr: The sideplate is made of steel. I made a master, then made a mold of the master and used this for injecting wax. The wax was then sent to a foundry for casting in steel.
Tim: I stained this with a combination of tannic acid and iron nitrate. The iron nitrate reacts with the tannic acid to form iron tannate. This is a very dark compound. Abraisives or scrapers are then used to work the stock. The dark color remains in the end grain regions creating the dramatic contrast. I then used a touch of honey amber Transtint dye over this. Finally it was finished with Tried and True Oil Varnish. The whole process is detailed in a blog post on my website. www.jimkibler.net
Thanks again everybody! Glad you all like it!
