Lonestarr: The sideplate is made of steel. I made a master, then made a mold of the master and used this for injecting wax. The wax was then sent to a foundry for casting in steel.

Tim: I stained this with a combination of tannic acid and iron nitrate. The iron nitrate reacts with the tannic acid to form iron tannate. This is a very dark compound. Abraisives or scrapers are then used to work the stock. The dark color remains in the end grain regions creating the dramatic contrast. I then used a touch of honey amber Transtint dye over this. Finally it was finished with Tried and True Oil Varnish. The whole process is detailed in a blog post on my website. www.jimkibler.net

I often shoot the guns I make, but I've not fired this one. Even though it's fully functional, I don't think it will be shot.
Someone asked about the metals used... It's mounted in steel. Most of it is 8620. Lock internals are O1, springs are 5160 and the frizzen is 1095. Thanks again everybody.
