Sketches help you get a design in your head. Engraving helps you learn how it really translates into metal. That's why the self study kit with Ron's books is so much better than just having the books - cutting the plates puts things into a perpective you can't get with just sketching (or at least I can't). Shading, for instance, is a very different process with a graver than with a pencil.
Mike - I always describe the class vs. indirect methods (books, videos, internet) as getting a bite of the steak vs. having it described.
It might be a bit until I get a chance to fiddle with English Scroll but it's on my list. Right now I'm at a bit in Ron's second book that I want to get pounded in well, and I've got my class with Lee in just 3 weeks.
