Smith & Wesson 36 Chief - Engraving My Second Pistol

Thanks guys. It's definitely got me motivated to get the entire pistol finished. I'm trying to give it a somewhat medieval feel. I love the designs on the armor and swords from that era. I'll upload images as I get to milestones in the process, which will take a good while.

Smith & Wesson 36 Chief - Engraving My Second Pistol

I've finished engraving the cylinder of the model 36 I am working on. It's going to be somewhat inspired by the antique revolvers produced by Tiffany & Co. It will take time, but I decided to sculpture engrave it. I will post more images as I go, but here is what I have completed so far. I...

Design Transfer onto Spherical Shaped Surface

Thanks everyone, for your input. I've heard people mention using "China White" also. I may give it a try.

    More practice

Check out Sam Alfano's "Engraving Scrollwork - Start to Finish". It's a good reference video. It will show you good techniques on background removal as well, using a rotary tool. But using a rotary tool, you must be extremely careful, and I would recommend practicing first. It can get away from...

Design Transfer onto Spherical Shaped Surface

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm comfortable with my drawing skill. That's how I had planned to approach these surfaces if nobody knows a transfer suggestion/solution. But If there's a way to do a transfer in this scenario, I would just like to learn it.

Design Transfer onto Spherical Shaped Surface

Seems maybe this would be a common question, but can anyone give me guidance or provide a thread/post link on doing a successful transfer onto a spherical shaped surface? For example: the part that protrudes behind the cylinder on the frame of a single action army revolver, or a trigger guard. I...

Pictures or rules for Black Leaf drawing?

I wouldn't mind knowing technique "rules" for Black Leaf design myself. I haven't yet tried Black Leaf. I think it's a very beautiful style. I can, however, give you some artist names that would make for great reference material. Take a look at the art of these engravers: Winston Churchill Eric...

    Question: How much magnification

I just saw this and did a quick check under my Leica A60 with a 0.63x objective lens. I was able to lower my telescopic GRS turntable vice stand all the way, raise up the Acrobat Versa / Leica A60 about three inches or so, zoom out all the way and refocus, and I could easily see an entire 2"...

    Question: How much magnification

Absolutely, I will end up getting the 0.75x objective lens at some point. I was just looking through a recent GRS catalogue yesterday. It's the only more powerful one I saw in their catalogue. Are there any other options any where else you think? Thanks.

    Question: How much magnification

I’m a pretty new engraver, but was fortunate to come across an entire setup. I have a Leica A60 with a 0.63x objective lense. The work distance is about 8”. I believe the minimum zoom is 3.5x, and maximum zoom is 15.75x. This range has been ok for what I’ve done so far. I can do pretty intricate...

Question: Lets talk about hearing protection / noise cancelling headphones - What do you use?

BTW, I was also extremely impressed with the quality of sound Beats produce.

Question: Lets talk about hearing protection / noise cancelling headphones - What do you use?

I have a set of some earlier generation Beats headphones that I use sometimes while working, so I can hear YouTube videos on my phone without interruption when my compressor kicks on. As BWoodworker mentioned, Beats probably wouldn’t necessarily have a “noise reduction rating”, but since day one...

Engraving my first Spyderco knife, sculpture technique

Hello all. I was going to wait until I was done to post anything about this, but I'm really pleased with how it's turning out. I'm putting the skills I learned from Sam Alfano's Deep Relief Sculpture Engraving video to good use. The skull is about 1.125" tall. The scrolls will be standard line...

    Engraved My First Firearm

So far, all I've engraved are three practice plates, a zippo since they're a cheap canvas, a brass bolster on a dagger (sculpture engraved), and a stainless spoon handle (sculpture engraved), and this S&W Model 10-5 which I have posted on GB. I did the end of the stainless spoon handle to get a...

Removing Manganese Phosphate Coating AKA Parkerized Coating

I was going to engrave a parkerized army issue 1911 for my stepdad's birthday. I've never seen an engraver parkerize a pistol after engraving it, but I'm thinking a parkerized engraved slide would look pretty good if engraved right. I didn't want to strip the coating off the entire gun, just the...

Removing Manganese Phosphate Coating AKA Parkerized Coating

Meshach, like Allen, my de-parkerizing project is put on the back burner also for now. I'm about to do a couple of knives. If you happen to use the Iosso product before Allen and I, will you post here and let us know how you like it also? I appreciate both of you guys.
