Sam and all the other camera buffs. Is it better for close-up work (engraving and the like) to use a 50-85mm (macro) lens or a short/medium telephoto lens (range of focal lengths?)

There's less wide angle distortion with a short telephoto. I'm using a Canon 100mm macro. I had a 180mm macro which was good, but the working distance was so great that it was difficult to shoot larger objects unless I put them on the floor. I prefer to shoot at benchtop height if I can.
