I just gotta know!

Weldon47 Calendar, March, Colt SAA How is that finish achieved? AND can that Gray tone be achieved on a Cimarron Model P after removing the chemical case coloring and the bluing?

I spoke to a local gunsmith today about prepping it and breaking it down for engraving BUT he didn't know how to get that finish when I showed him the calendar. So I would like to learn how to do this myself if anyone can point me in the right direction.
