Be thankful you're not into photography. I think a heroin or cocaine addiction would be cheaper.

I am also starting to think that Tool Porn addiction might be hereditary, now that I think of it, one of the best gifts I ever received from my father was a toolbox.

I have seen somewhere that a study was done on TAS or TP and its an incurable hereditary dieses that seems to inflict mostly males 95% of the time and isn’t limited to age it inflicts young and old alike I myself have suffered for many years i.e. I have had a wet tile cutter still new in the box for 12 years only because a visit to the local diy store for some paint that I noticed the tile cutter had been marked with the wrong price someone had priced it at 1/3 the right price on taking it to checkout they honored the marked price what a bargain just need to find a tiling project. The wife thinks I should open a tool shop an thin down the collection so take heart once you have TP just learn to live with it or do as I have on some occasions get your mate to order it for you and slip it in the back door while she is at the shoe shop picking up a bargain

some of the best TP on here is "Marios sweet home",...
Oh c'mon, i'm free from this TAS or TP. Don't know, what you guys talking about. Need all the tools i have. They are absolutely required. No work without them. Impossible to have them not.

(...damn - there are still some who have lot more than me. Wait, let me see, where is the catalog? Think, i could use these or that, no - these and that! And perhaps this one ,too. Sure i need them both...)

...of course, the postman is my friend. He always has a friendly smile for me - one or two times a day! Who needs other friends?
...really don't know, what you're talking about... (and you haven't seen them all...).
Doorbell rings - could be Michael from UPS - so long!

How can there be talk of Tool Porn without photos? Here's a nifty power honer and stropping machine I got several years ago for making wood carving tools sharper than a surgical scalpel:

YOU KNOW YOU WANT ONE! :)

A wise man at my favorite flea market once told me "you spend half of your life collecting things, and the other half getting rid of them"!

To which I said..."I think i'm approaching the turning point"!

i know what you mean- i have a few tools still in the box that were acquired because they were such a deal. 3 routers and a mortiser are in that category along with some other stuff.

a couple years ago a buddy called me with a tool emergency: the mechanic who works on his race cars was over at his house trying to fit a new seat into his Lotus and he needed a sander to shave a bit off the shell. the wrench gets on the phone and i start asking him questions about what/where it needs sanded and the guy says, "If you don't have the right sander it's no big deal, I'll figure out some other way." i replied, "Don't worry, I HAVE the right sander. I just don't want to haul every sander I own over to Randy's house..."

I've found that if you want to learn something, you have to get all the tools that go with it...there's no such thing as classes where you can just try out new skills ( oh, wait there were those ceramic classes...) tools have always been a part of my life, even before my mother gave me her old power drill when she was upgrading...
And the UPS man visits here regularly, too!
Cheaper then therapists!

I like the basics. I started out push graving and built a homemade pneumatic tool and carving stand. I already had the two stones I use to hand sharpen. After awhile I got away from steel and the pneumatic tool and have been push graving copper, silver and brass with great pleasure. All tools and the stand are homemade out of material I had on hand. I have bought silver, silver solder, flux, jewelers saw and blades but other than that all I needed was the excellent advice on these forums and my bootstraps. Thanks to all that have shared their knowledge and advice as it was the key.

I do want to carve steel and will acquire TAS at some point in the future. Till then I'm haven a blast with the basics.

How can there be talk of Tool Porn without photos? as states by doc.

Come on DOC how can these poor inflicted members control their TP when you post photo's like this tempting them even further into the depths of more toys to fill the bench and fueling the journey to the dark side taking away quality family time like taking to the wife, but being lured into the workshop and playing with these much needed tools shame on you ;) by the way were do you get the wheels for that wonderful toy you have

Doc, the twelve step program works exceptionally well. I'm happy to say I'm on step 31 and making good progress! :)

Only 31? You're not as far gone as some of us yet... maybe there's still some hope for you. I just gave up and succumbed to the disease.

For example: I'm recovering from two cervical spinal surgeries that didn't go well 7 months ago. So, I'm looking at getting back to engraving and other hobbies again "some day". That doesn't seem to curb the need for regular tool buying "fixes". I recently bought BOTH of the new GRS Easy Sharps! After all... Sam has one! :) And, they make both a 105 and a 120!

Really, all you need is a larger lunch box to get your latest toy past the wife.

Old tools

Tools,tools, tools,the breath of life.:happyvise:

I see many have the same can't pass up tools feeling. I see this as normal and healthy. After all somebody else might get that tool and put it on their pile. That is not an acceptable idea,at least to me. (also works for guns, and things that go fast.):clapping:

But the real deal for me is old tools,I love old tools. They are well made and have a feel to them new stuff dosen't.The other part is stuff in a fitted wooden box.I do love my tools (or whatever) in a fitted box. Many times when I get something home it never sees the box again but it gives me a warm feeling just to know it has a box.::)
So it goes on,tools are a good thing, you can never go wrong buying a GOOD tool, they are a joy just to hold and pet.:)

On the other hand a poorly made tool will eventually maky a person nuts.

So off I go always looking for that old toolmaker that is selling his stuff, or maby in that barn there is a nice anvil or stake to pound on, one never knows.

Have tool fun it's good for the soul.
