When I started engraving watches, experienced watch engravers advised that the movement and crystal should be removed to avoid damage. This is what I now do with every watch we engrave as ruining a movement by use of pneumatic tools could be very expensive. Just as an experiment I once did a practice cut on an old watch. The way the hands jiggled about convinced me that not removing the movement was not a good idea.
