I cut one piece of 304 stainless and will never touch it again! trying to dig out a background for relief is just self masochistic! How you can say it cuts very nice is beyond me LOL

304 (and 303) is definitely on the tuffer side but the trade off lies in the fact that it is one of the most corrosion resistant and durable grades of stainless that can be cut rather well. It is high-end & surgical grade .... great stuff.

Tim, if you ever wanna try something that is truly exotic and high dollar ... try hastelloy-C. It is brutal to cut but it is THE most corrosion resistant grade of stainless on the market. It's also about $250 bucks / sq.ft for 8 gauge sheet.

304,303 and hastelloy polish up like chrome and stay that way even in the worst climatatic conditions and the engraving stays looking great.

Bracelet blanks of 303 or 304 are a fantastic substitute for anyone who is allergic to sterling.

Yeah, my experiences with 304 are not pleasant or favorable either. If you can make them from 416 it would be much better, Joe.

Does anyone know of a supplier for 416 in sheet? 22 or 24 ga.
Or is there something better than 416 that is available in thin gauge sheet?
thanks, Dave

I did not post this for the sake of a hardness argument.
I could make this in any metal and somebody would have something to say.
Tim I can say it cuts nice Becuase I am using and cutting Them
Chris Thank you it does polish extremly nice and stays bright
Sam How are you?
Maybe I will cut them in 416 next time. To who ever might want to try these they are inexpensive and can send me a private email If you would like.
Thanks Joe Cera

Joe,
I had sent you a PM a few days ago regarding the damascus buckle blanks. If they are available, how are those priced?

Thanks

Hard but Do-able

Joe Cera sent me a couple of buckles in the 300 series stainless. I saw where many of you were saying how miserable it is to cut. I must say that it is certainly noticably harder than the 400 series I have been cutting. That said, however, with a little more care, I easily cut a double wheat border using a Glensteel graver.
I didn't have a carbide graver shaped and sharpened but I do now and anticipate carbide will make it easier to cut.

That said, I don't plan on removing background from the 300 series. Any coments about scupting the 300 series?

Hardness of stainless steel

Being a machinist by profession, I have found that the hardness/toughness of stainless in 304 depends mainly on its condition,i.e. anealled, rolled, etc.
303 is supposed to be a free machining type of stainless if I remember correctly. All will work harden during engraving, and being that engraving is not very deep, you usually are in the work hardened zone caused by rolling, sheet forming, ect. In machining, we try to get below the hard skin from rhe rolling process. In engraving, the lines aren't deep enough to do this. Also, if you make a cut and try to deepen it, it will work harden.
Hope this helps,

Well, pappy, what would we get into as far as annealing objects before engraving, or possibly during engraving if we need to make a deeper cut?
