The customer said he had a pattern and I just had to engrave it. The "pattern" arrived as 2 photos and a pencils sketch. Took 4 times longer to do up the design than actually cut it. My next job is silver parts for a bagpipe maker. I get all the fun stuff, people must forget I am a cowboy bright cutter.

Planning, design, and layout costs the same as cutting. If not move on to a more profitable job. Same with special jigs and fixtures for bag pipe parts unless you think you will do more of them then you can kind of recoup over two or three jobs. Fred

Yes we all learn from each job. This customer wants some inlays replaced on an old French clock, I am sure I will recoup my losses somewhere soon. Dave, the face is 4" diameter. Fred, the bagpipe job will lead to a lot of work so I will invest a bit more into it, the guy came and met me so I feel ok about him.

very nice work. i've done a few brass faces for old grandfather clocks. they were fun to do, but like engraving a football field.
