Attached a photo of a real Peacock for comparison. The males are called Peacocks, the females are called Peahens. The males have the interesting plumage to attract the females.

Jim, I am completely blown away by you work. This is no exception.

So many questions, so little time.

What is the background material? I see different metals, and a variety of cuts that defy comprehension. Lovely work. Thank you for showing.

No, no, no! That's a box-lid by the incomparable Unno Shomin(1844-1915). He was one of the founding heads of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts metals department. I would love to take credit for the Pea-fowl but someone would surely bust me!

Also we should note it is in the collection of the Kiyomizu-Sannenzaka Museum in Kyoto.

Here is the link again for a discussion of this and another work of his:http://forums.dfoggknives.com/index.php?showtopic=16622&st=0&p=154934&fromsearch=1&#entry154934

When I was a child, my best friend had two peacocks and two peahens. Cool creatures, three got eaten by the foxes. It's a hard life for an oriental bird to live up here :p

The piece is of course, inspiring, true art and skill in one piece.

Is this an inlay, sculpt, or what? It is amazing, especially to someone with my last name.

Joe Paonessa
Combination of high relief sculpted inlay and flat inlay of gold, shakudo(gold/copper alloy) and shibuichi(copper/silver alloy). Carved and engraved with mercury amalgam fused into some of the engraved lines. In shibuichi ground.
