Hello. I want to try doing some scrimshaw work on a bone handled knife and do it very realistic. My question is this. The knife has a shiney urethane or other coating on it, do I need to sand this down first? If so, what do I re-apply after I do the scrimshaw? Since I'm a beginner, I'm also wondering once I get my image outlined, do I have to make tiny scratches to add shading on bone, or can I just shade by slightly rubbing ink in the bone pores
? Thank-you for all your help, I really appreciate it. If anyone can give specific steps in doing realism scrimshaw work on a bone handled knife, I would really appreciate it too.

A good place to start would be Sandra Brady's DVD's. See her add on this forum.

if i were doing this i'd add shade lines. i don't think simply blackening an area would give you much control over the final appearance of the design. just my thoughts.
