This work was ordered by Lebeau-Courally, the Belgian gunmaker ( Carl: it is their cipher that you see on one side of the knife, not a Royal Family). The order was : a multi-colored raised gold inlay which doesn't hide the pattern of the damascus steel!
The damascus inox is a tough material and one of the difficulty with this type of steel is that you have to prepare the inlaying before the heating treatment but inlay the gold after the hardening ( the hardening temperature (1050°C) is too high for the gold which melt at 1080 °C)
