Just a reminder this catalogue "The Brilliant Line: Following the Early Modern Engraver, 1480-1650" has excellent examples of flawless execution of shading/hatching/cross-hatching as executed by the masters. Worth acquiring this catalogue for anyone interested in obtaining a greater understanding of these shading techniques.

Hi Carlos

It's simple enough. Just cut a series of shading lines close together and space them very close together and further apart so that you go from dark to light. Have a good look at it........ Then lightly cross hatch and have another look. You'll notice that the edges of the shading lines have a softer look and more faded out. You should also notice that the close together shading lines look darker.

On a leaf you can make the cross hatching square across the cuts or place them on an angle so that the in between spaces are more of a diamond shape. You can also curve the cross hatching cuts to contour with the leaf shape and this will give the leaf a more rounded look.

The best way for you to see all this is to do it yourself in real size :)

Cheers
Andrew
