this is inspired by a post by mdengraver, 1-5-08. will take a spell to download, so hang in there. i will have to posts some, then come back and post again. one note however, remember that alot of books do not make the engraver, you have to do that. they are reference, a place to go back to for ideas. *note- added scrimshaw and muzzleloader engraving books for the members. Added a sample of gunsmithing books. If you have a book not listed on here, add it,the more information, the better for all.

And don't forget the J.M. Bergling series if you can find them (three volumes I am aware of). I think they are being reprinted but I am not sure about that. They are filled with excellent lettering and monogramming styles. They also have mythical figures and ornamentation etc..............Ron S

the encyclopedia of small spot engraving, is copyrighted 1969, dick sutphen, scottsdale, arizona. library of congress number 72-89858. there are classic engravings, american history, cities, graphic art, sculpture, money, ships. 207 pages. hope that helps. i find books at gargage sales, flea markets,small-town craft fairs, the internet. not everything is labeled engraving. my wife pick up ENGLISH FURNITURE DECORATION WOODWORKS AND ALLIED ARTS, and leaf thru it, only to find scrolls and leafs from yesterday. i would have passed it up if she hadnt taken a peak.

what sparked me to get into engraving was a long time association of firearms, knives, and any magazine or book that had related subjects. i found a Guns magazine in an old barn, about 1961, and it had engraving in it. i never forgot the pictures, nor the fact that highly - skilled artists were still active. so, like many, it has taken years to get to a point where the itch has been laying dormate and must be scratched, and i entered into the world of engraving, only to find out it was alive and well. i thank sam for starting up this forum, and my buddy MONK for his time and freindship, and i want to also thank each and every member here, for without your threads and posts on everything under the sun pertaining to this craft, id still be dumber than dirt.. the knowledge here, is priceless, and so is the freindships. thanks. And how about that; I even found my membership card from the Ruger collectors association- had joined before my divorce......

G'day all,

I've been watching this site for some time but don't feel confident enough to contribute as far as engraving skills go - not just yet.

My name is Roger Beard living in Adelaide, South Australia. Have been a bench jeweller for over thirty years but want to spread my wings a little into engraving. Spent a week in Stockton, CA with Brian Marshall last year and am only now putting some of those skills into action (I reckon Brian would be disappointed that I wasn't more diligent to get back to the scorpers). That is just a brief introduction, more will follow but I thought that I may be able to help with this thread -

I noticed some of the Bergling books in the "alibris" book website. Some are used copies but be prepared to pay some big money. I also received an email from "House of Jewellery" (note the spelling) from Australia advising that they were selling the Bergling sets for AU$220-. I think that they may source these from GRS but not sure.

All are hard cover - they have the set listed for $111.80.

Downloadable Books

I would like to say how enjoyable it is to see the craftsmanship that is displayed by the members on this site. It is truly an inspiration to those of us who do this for a hobby. I try to do a little engraving on copperwork. I also do chasing and repousse as well as art smithing---all strictly on a recreational basis. I really enjoy reading and looking for old books about metalwork and ornament. Here are a few of the old texts that I have found useful for ideas and inspiration, they are all downloadable from either Google Books or Archive.org. You may have some already listed.

Unique and Fancy Ornaments -- Knight, Frederick

Cusack’s Freehand Ornament –Armstrong, Charles

Monograms & Ciphers -- Turbayne, A. A.

Modern Letter Engraving – Rees, Fred Holmes

The Volute in Architecture and Architectural Decoration – Newcomb, Rexford

Handbook of Art Smithing -- Meyer, Franz Sales

The books on Art Smithing and the Volute are more architectural but they have a lot of scroll illustrations. The nineteenth century German smiths were masters of light and airy scrollwork.

Also good are the books by Lewis F. Day on ornament, lettering, and design. If you search for decoration and ornament you will get lots of titles. Some of the old texts are interesting to read.

Thanks,
Terry

More Engraving Related Books

Richard,

I will run with your suggestion to add some books, so here goes. My apoligies if I duplicated any already posted. I was trying to remember what you already posted when I went to where my books are stored to take the pictures.

* Wilson's latest 2 volume set of The Colt Engraving Book. This one is the ultimate work (and photos) on engraved Colts.
* Wilson's Colt Engraving and Garton's Colt's Colt's SAA Post War Models to which I contributed some material.
* 2 books by Doc O'Mera full of engraved Colts and Fine Colts by Wilson full of engraved guns.
* Colt Heratige and The Peacemakers by Wilson, again full of engraved pieces. As you might note, I have spent much of my meager $'s with Mr. Wilson!
* 2 spiral bound Colt engraving catalogs from the late 70's.

I'm not too familiar with managing these attachments so they may not be in the order above.

Roger Bleile
