Titanium “Iron Crossâ€￾ ring

Yes this looks like the German nazi reward for courage, but if that would be the only histoory behind it, I probably would not have posted this one.

But it was ordered by one of my clients. So instead of taking all responsibility executing a design that could be interpreted as a nazi sign, I had my student and son in law Jeroen do practice some filling and piercing.

I’m convinced I can make whatever my eyes can see out of Titanium, so was this.

No you cannot make this with the lathe.

When I was a kid this symbol was commonly known as a "surfer's cross" for the surfboarding crowd :)

Nice saw piercing by your student.

Thanks Sam, I only assisted my student while learning myself.
But good to know this symbol has more meanings than I know.
The reason perhaps that it was also used by surfers could point on courage.

It is an ancient symbol predating National Socialism (nazi) by centuries. It is also known as the Maltese cross. http://www.google.com/search?q=malt...gfJzfHBBg&sqi=2&ved=0CEQQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=566

Even the iron cross predates the nazi era and was used as a Prussion and, after unification, the Imperial German army decoration, though in nazi times the swastika was added to the center of the cross.

Also the flyfot, that we today recognize as the nazi swastika, is also an ancient symbol that was used in Ancient Greek architecture, especially in fretwork. The fylfot was also a symbol used by American Indians and was on the sholder patch of the US 45th infantry division until the second world was when it was changed to the thunderbird.

Thanks Roger for sharing your Historical knowledge on this one. Indeed the Nazi symbols they didn’t invent them all by themselves. But they are recognized being theirs nowadays.
