Inexpensive and lots of it to play with.
Does not take adhesive so it's not good to actually attach to anything. They do sell teflon tape with adhesive for those situations.

how thick is it? is it a fairly sturdy sheet, or more like a thin film?

Just measured it at .008", fairly sturdy.
