I use a hammer to tap the beading tool one at a time. Start around the edge and work your way inwards. My own preference is for a size 0 or 1 punch and make the background as even as possible and you get a very pleasing textured satin finish.

Naturally others have different views.

Cheers

Is this the actual bit that needs sawing out or a pratice plate?
For a recessed beaded background I matt it with a #1 punch from Ngraver using a hammer. I go around the edgers first and then do the center. I overlap and punch it all over the place> i am actually getting a beaded look to it that is different than a old west neat style that is usually not done on a recessed area. Now if i want it black......then I just use my old pointed punch in my airtact and get carried away instead of the beading punch.
