How do I transfer a scroll photo onto a cup?

is it a real photograph, or some kind of line drawing ? look in the tips section at the forum page top. in the search bar type "transfer techniques".

First off... does the cup have a curve like a straight-walled shot glass/coffee mug - or a compound curve like an average teacup? (with swollen sides)

as brian mentioned, the compound curve brings problems. if you have a line of text, put it in an arc. this will allow it to lay flat on the double curved surface. on certain transfers, one can cut relief slits in the paper. this, too, can allow for a better transfer. this is also another reason to develop drawing skills. there's no problem when drawing directly on the compound curve.

Depending on the complexity this may be one of those times when you forget about trying to transfer and just go with the drawing using Chinese White and a fine
pencil.
