What exactly is this? French grey?

In order to really make the engraving stand out sometimes the gun or other object goes through the bluing process then the bluing is selectively removed from the surface of the metal where it is engraved. Usually only in areas that the engraver wants to highlight. It leaves the metal grey rather than blue/black or brown in that area. Fred

When I was at rays basic corse I saw a shotgun he did this way it was really cool and mad the dog bolino scene really stand out
