I have been asked to engrave one of the new colt 1911 22s. It will be only my 2nd gun. It has finish that appears to be baked on and the frame is an alloy. Do I try to remove the finish, if so how? Should I try to engrave through it. Also, how will the alloy engrave? What problems can be expected. Should I stay away from it because of my inexperience.

I have engraved a few of these. They are alloy and cut like butter but you need to be sure you don't cut to deep. The ones I did I Polished and put black oil paint in cuts and left in the white. They came out nice.
I can't answer if your ready to engrave on this project only you can, but remember once you make the cut theres no erasing it's not like paper.
Good Luck and have fun.

when in doubt- research before error ! when this question comes up again, if none of the members are sure, contact the manufacturer or a very competent gunsmith.
