I am doing some engraving on my knifes. I would like to hold the knife so I can engrave the butt plates. The knifes are about 6'' to 14''. I would like to keep the plate on the knife.
Thanks for the help

protective leather pads with soft wood blocks will work in the vise to protect the blades.

Bob Finlay in Kansas has a special setup for engraving the butts on long knives. He has a vise with a hold drilled all the way through. I'll admit this is probably impossible for someone without a lathe or massive drill press and an extra vise to bore out. Each vise jaw is clamped individually. I should ask him about this because it's been a long time since I've seen it and I hope I'm telling you correctly.

What you're trying to do is very difficult with a standard engraving ball vise. My old hammer & chisel stand-up vise would work as it can be tilted over. I'll be interested to hear what other solutions people have.
