I did this for a fellow who wanted his German Shorthair Pointer (GSP) on a Acme whistle. The diameter is just a little more than the size of a nickel. Not sure about the depth. I just deepley cut the outline and then began to shape the head.

Air assist for the deep outline the rest hand pushed. That's my favorite 90 degree hand tool with a lignum vitae handle.

I obtained a piece of Lignum Vitae when I worked at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard (PNSY) back in the 80's. It a wonderful hard oily wood that was used on some older ships for bearings. No need for a finish, simply buff and it comes up beautifully. A very heavy wood. Wish I had some more to play with.
