Back when cars had external telescoping tubular antennae (sorry, yer gonna have to go look that up if you weren't around then) we used them for all kinds of puposes, including something similar on round graver blanks...
The best ones were brass tubing - plated on the outside. You could get solder to run inside the tubes, so we were able to make permanent/rigid/wobble free adapters.
Maybe, just maybe, there are still some old cars in wrecking yards that you could get them from?
