This became the "Practice Piece for an idiot". Means for me.
Mistakes that I can see:
1. Practice on type 330 Stailless Steel(Royal PITA to cut)
2. Deep relief without enough "meat" under (had to make it too shallow)
3. Deep curved and narrow pockets( PITA to cut in viscous SS)
4. Overall design does not fold into the piece, looks artificial. (practice\practice\practice)
5. Piece is not finished properely( finish is everything).
6. Too much time spent, way too much.:(

On a bright side. The whole piece was carved with just two cutters. Flat and 90 degree angle. Both are carbide.

You are welcome to kick me. :beat up:

Serioulsy, thats some tough work in some tough metal, I think you did a great job on it and would be proud to own it. I think I would go back and stiple some of the areas beneath the leaves to make them stand out more.

The idea of the piece is great!

Yeah, the execution wound up not as good due to the tremendous difficulties involved but I really like the idea of it.

Don't sell yourself short, you have a good thing going here. I don't know how long you have been working at engraving, but there is something really interesting happening here.
I often wonder how many times the leading world class engravers cut a design before we see the end result. I'd love to see what you could do if you turned all those negatives to your advantage.
The work has a great natural organic feel. You really should try this again! The design is original and refreshing. I really like this piece.

Hi D.M.

A good start!!! You have everything there and all the elements are in place and all it really needs is some finesse with the finishing..........and that will come with practice.

Don't worry about the time it took...........that is not an issue with this kind of thing. It's only important if it's a paying job.

Take as much time as you need. Patience is a very big virtue with engraving :)

Cheers
Andrew

Fine job. being super smooth is one style the roughness of chisel marks is certainly appropriate if that is what YOU choose. Time-that is why deep sculpture work is expensive-Very nice work-Fred

I disagree with your point #4 D.M.
I think the overall design folds onto the piece rather well. The tips of one row of leaves being the intersecting point of the overlaps in the other row.
It's a neat idea and the art seems original.
I agree with Theresamarieus, don't sell yourself short.
