I like drawing directly on what I'm engraving. I have no problem drawing directly on brass without chinese white, I can see my pencil lines perfectly. I do have problems seeing my design on steel without using chinese white. How do most of you erase an incorrect line to redraw, just dab chinese white on it to erase? Thanks for your help. Jerry

Instead of chinese white I use a white pen. Pen-touch. http://www.amazon.com/Pen-Touch-Permanent-Marker-Medium-Point/dp/B00161O404/ref=pd_sim_k_1
This one has worked best for me. You can write on it with a pencil and you can use a regular eraser if you make a mistake.

This one works too but it takes much longer to dry and it is more shinee, so it does not take the pencil lines as well, but it sticks to the metal better. It does not rub off with an eraser.

I hope this helps.

Jerry: Try using modeling clay to doll the surface of the metal. I use sam alfonos transfer wax, you can draw on it and if you make a mistake you can use a sharpened tooth pick to erase your mistakes. Then just draw over the area where your mistake was.
