first step is to lay out the shape.
Drill a small hole.
Next, cut it out.
Then remove material from the sides of the die to create clearance for the metal that will be domed.
Then load the die in the press and do a test piece.
Now you can see which parts need more clearance. Then I remove more material from the die to prevent the tearing and shearing that is happening.

very cool Haraga. Thanks for posting this.

My question on this is I am guessing you would have to machine the piece for the male die to attatch to the kick press (in top of photo 5. cylinder that male die is on the bottom of.) If you do indeed machine this do you need one for each male die you use or can you just simply use multiple male dies with the cylinder piece?

Also how does the male die attatch to the cylinder (or die holder for lack of better words)?

Thanks

Just one cylinder is needed and the male die sticks to it with beeswax.

What type of saw do you use? What is thickness of the steel?
Thank You

This is cool!
The buckle would be the same process except you use the curved plunger and bottom plate.

Thank you Leonard for posting this.
Happy New Year!

Yes the process is the same Peter. I used a 2/0 blade in a jewelers saw. You don't need all the fancy saws that companies sell to do this. It is way more precise to cut these by hand.

You use pretty small blade to cut. Got to get a press so I can try all this. Thank you for posting all the great info.

A 2/0 is the largest blade that I have. 4/0 is a common size that I use to cut sheet.

I think I use the 4/0 blades for most everything. I don't like the fancy ones that rio-grande sells under their own name because I think they suck.
