Hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas season.
I thought I would share a project or two I started and was trialling my new camera, an Panasonic FZ 40. So the photos need some work but I think they'll be fair.
I started with an idea sketched out, then a tracing paper copy or print the image, to apply to mylar to use as the template. I scribe around the template onto the silver sheet of the image to be made. Once sawed out of the sheet the silver is filed and engraved. The finished pieces will show that I've incorporated cow horn into the design.
The one piece is a stick barrette with the carved cow horn bezel set. I carved the horn with gravers this time to see how it would work. I finished polishing after I took a couple pictures and forgot to snap another couple before I sent it out, but sure helped to minimize reflection.
The more tear dropped shaped piece has a translucent cow horn crystal I bezel set to carve a mirror finished oval with a mariners compass engraved beneath. This piece of horn was not dyed but scraped to thickness.
The folding knife with the necklace pendent is an inexpensive Winchester in stainless. I thought it was cheap enough to play on and it was a pain but not too bad with carbalt. I'd always wanted to try a rose so I think this style came out fair. Maybe when I find the wrenches I'll finish doodling on this knife.
Enjoy
Mark

Excellent work as usual Mark! :thumbs up:

That same shape as the "mariner's compass" is what I inlaid into the cheek piece of my 1770 Isaac Haines style PA long rifle. In that case it's known as the "hunter's star". It points to all four directions and all points in between.

Thank you everyone.
Doc, Most hunters stars I've done on cheekpieces are much simpler generally speaking.
Seth, that was one of the better pictures I took with the new camera and haven't touched it other than crop/resizing. This one was done sitting in my recliner playing with a single source cfl light.
