Marcus,

Let this end here or else take it private. I will not have a big fight in a public forum, especially with me being a new guy here. I value this forum too much to loose it and all of the helpfull advice it has to offer.

Dan, if I offended you please accept my apologies. It was far from my intention to do so and this is the problem with the written word over face to face contact where you would have heard in my tone that I wasn't seeking any form of conflict. I was just trying to point out that by side tracking and getting a cheap/free/2nd hand copy of the book you would be cutting Ron out of the deal and away from his royalties (which are very small in comparison to the knowledge you'll gain from such a book).

This is what I meant by saying "getting something for free for personal gain." You might be paying 20 or 30 bucks for the book (which in your view isn't "free") but the man who wrote the book and is giving up his knowledge to you is getting nothing for it, so from his point of view you are getting the benefit of his knowledge for nothing (i.e. for "free"). To you, you'll have paid your dues (i.e. you've paid for the book) but to the author you'll have got something for nothing because he gains nothing financially from your deal. I hope you understand what I mean and understand that from the author's point of view this doesn't seem fair. Remember, we aren't talking selling hundreds of thousands of copies where selling a book on or giving it away makes no real difference to the authors income; engraving is a very small and highly specialised field so annual sales are never going to be large.

The engraving world is very small so no one is going to become a millionaire (or even get rich) by writing books for engravers, LOL! Many of us do not have pensions so the small income that can be derived from selling one's knowledge can be very helpful. I do wish you well and hope that good things are in store for you and your wife. Once again I'm very sorry for any ill feeling I may have caused you.

Thank you Marcus,

Thank you, I accept your apology. I do however respectfully disagree about the idea that buying a used copy of a book is taking something away from the author. I don't think that Ron Smith would want his book thrown away when someone passes away or quits engraving.

BTW I am horrified to learn that Ron Smith lost his thumb. What a terrible thing to happen to such a talented arrtist. I hope that he is still able to teach. I had been wondering why he is not still active on this list.

I expect that I will eventually buy new copies all of his books . It is just not feasible now with other more pressing financial obligations. And I really want to make up for lost time and start learning as soon as I can. If buying a used copy can further that goal then that is what I need to do.

So lets get on with learning and sharing knowlege.

Best wishes,

Hey Chris,

Make sure you pass on that Dore' book to a worthy successor before they pull the plug on you. It may be a contradiction that, though I won't sell my books I did give one away to someone who I knew would appreciate it.:thumbs up:

Roger

Huh? What book? :big grin:

Actually Roger .... I hired a Vodou Priestess to protect my collection from being haphazardly dispersed after my death. Any part of it may only go (freely) to an aspiring and passionate engraver who exhibits great promise otherwise 100 years of toil will befall the family of the executor of my estate. If the recipient(s) of anything from my collection ever quits engraving and fails to pass on what he was given in the same manner, 1000 years of torment will follow him into the next life.

You should consider it, it really doesn't cost that much. :big grin:
