I see a lot of people talking about numbers in reference to metals like "303 stainless steel" . I have no idea what this means. Is there a place I can learn what this means. Thanx, Dave
they're different grades/alloys/formulations of metals. common types of stainless use for knife handles are 303, 304, & 416. blades tend to be 404C, ATS34(?) and others, altho i'm really out of date on that stuff. some are harder and/or heat-treatable, some softer, some easier to machine, more flexible, etc.
ordinary non-stainless steels incl. 1018, 1018L (L stands for 'lead' added), O1, A2, etc., etc., etc., ad infinitum.
virtually every metal has these codes to designate its variations. go to www.speedymetals.com and poke around a bit- you'll see what i mean.
If is says 303 or 304 it means it's a pain in the butt!!!!!!!!!! It's gummy & hard to work with as far as I'm concerned, 416SS is the best for bolsters and engraving.
