You also don't have a thousand tourists chattering and snapping flash pictures. The guards clap their hands intermittently and tell the crowd to be quiet (it is an active church) but in a minute the cacophony begins again.

If you go, the best time is late in the afternoon after the crowds of bus tourists have already moved on. The sistine chapel is part of the Vatican museum admission.
