Truss Rod Cover

Here is a Sterling Silver Truss Rod Cover I just engraved for a Gibson S.G. for a Christian Brother that plays at my church. Notice the Alpha and Omega symbols.

You're getting quite a bit of heel drag, Tim. What graver are you using and how large is the heel?

I use home made tools, and I resharpened this one before I started and put a very small heel on it, but it did drag a lot. Maybe the angle should be higher for working in silver?

Maybe you can give us an accurate description of your graver, Tim. Make your heel about 1/4mm back from the point. I assume you're using a square or 120. Silver is really soft stuff and heel drag can be more pronounced in soft metals, which means keeping the gravers as sharp as possible with short heels is important. Also, control plays a really big part in softer metals.

Sam if I need to make the lettering deeper would I need to make the heel longer?

Tool geometry

Here is a drawing of my tool (roughly). It is a square, made from a drill blank and is still very sharp. The drawing may not show too well, but the heel is about 0.3mm and the angle is about 15 deg. I noticed the heels were not very even on closer inspection, one side was a little longer and not quite as straight as the other.
