It doesn't matter which direction you make the cut as long as you get a good result. Back cutting is a little difficult at first until you get some experience, but you will have to learn it sooner or later.

It is a natural cut to lean right and cut an arc or curve to the left (if you are right handed). It is unnatural and against the technical capabilities of the tool when you lean left and cut a round line to the left. This cut needs to be shallow or you will tear up the edges, and the tool mst be shaped properly not to confound this cut.(tendril cut).

The cut that is the underside of the spiral or tendril cut, I call the base cut.

To construct a leaf:
1. Do the base cut first. 2. Tendril cut next, 3. Then the cap cut (determines the mass and volume of the leaf and it is important not to have the center portion of the leaf (flat spot left) to be wider than your hollow round tool. 4. Closure cut, and then trim cuts.
