I know this has been covered in the past, but what do you guys finish your work with, just prior to engraving? Gun in particular is a pre war Winchester 63, I have sanded to 400 grit. Is this adequate, or do I go to 600? I guess this is manufacturer specific? Any help greatly appreciated.
Thank You, Rob Jones

Rob, I polish to 400, cutmain lines of scroll and polish to 600. After cutting shading, I polish to 800 & if bulino is required, I then polish to 1200 afterwards.

Hey Ken
I never knew you polished in progression either while cutting. I just go to the grit I need depending on the job at hand. The grits you suggested are good ones. I usually go upwards of 600 no matter what.

Marty, I got use to doing it this way as years ago, I always left a tad of burr along the cuts --- before I knew how to properly sharpen the tool. Guess I just got the hang of it & never quit doing it.
