I was on a computer I haven't gotten around to loading any drawing software on the other day. I just needed a letter in an oval, mirrored, for a transfer.

I realized that the latest version of Open Office includes a drawing program so figured it was worth checking it out before I fiddled with anything else.

It's no PhotoShop or Corel but for basic layout type stuff - :D
You can easily add basic shapes, import your scans, resize and group things, add text, etc..

The only real 'flaw' I've found so far is that you can't flip text - you have to convert it to an image first and I've yet to find the settings to get it to convert to something smooth. Probably just need to make the text oversized, convert it to an image and flip it then let shrinking it down to size clean up the edges.

The whole Open Office package is nice. It's an open-source replacement for the MicroSoft Office suite so you get the Word processor, spreadsheet, 'PowerPoint', drawing, and a couple more things. http://www.openoffice.org

Plus, of course, it's Free! :yes

Inkscape is another free vector program. I am not sure how it compares to Corel or Illustrator, but you can't beat the price. I played with it a few years a go and there seemed to be a fair number of tutorials online too.
