Eventually, I will get there... I hope

I have been real busy making these. For each one, now that I have the tools, I want to add a bit of engraving to them. There has been a resurgance in the past couple years for using straight razors. I have shaved with one at least once a week since the early 90's. Using one forces me to slow down and appreciate a bit of simplicity and tradition once in a while.

Anyway, I don't have a lot of patterns due to lack of experience. I'm sure there is a lot more I could do with an area 5/32 inch wide and 6 inches long, I just don't know what it is yet. Suggestions are most certainly welcomed.

Those are nice Bill. If you have taken any of the courses at GRS, the notebook they give out contains several border designs that would work well.

I think Sam may have posted some in the tips archive.

Those are very nice knives, and I know all too well that it is very easy and fast to make good steel cut hair. But my careless ways would probably get me killed using one of those bad boys. Even though, those are very nice and thanks for posting. Seth

Thanks for all the compliments. They are appreciated. I did take the class at GRS, I think it was last June, under the guidance of Rex. He was extremely helpful and I feel I learned a great deal from him.

I use ATS-34 mostly for my steel and shoot for 58-60 RC for hardness. I also use plain ole 0-1 tool steel on occasion. I use mostly exotic woods for scales. I really like the burls but I have to make a liner for those because they just aren't strong enough to withstand the flexing.

If I get a bit better at this engraving stuff, I think I might go ahead and match it up with what's left of my Asian tusk or use the 10-inch piece of fossilized walrus tusk I have been hoarding for a couple years. I just hope I don't go to looking at it and think I need to learn how to scrimshand as well.

Very nice! I can see an upswing in straight razors being used as we move away from our disposable economy-good news for engravers, I think. The more "nice things" that people have to replace plastic crap, the better we will all be. I like the inlays on the handle also.
