Most of the patterned ones I'm aware of are laser etched.
"etching" can mean many things to many people. i can do it with a laser, electrical discharge machine ( edm ), different acids. it can also be done with a process which is the reverse of electroplating, or de-plating. i'm presently fiddling with this process now for some of the stuff i do.

if you are talking about the GRS plates with layout designs etched on them, it is done with a laser.
