Use flat wire and file a bevel on the edges that are going to be pressed into the wood. I use old hacksaw blades and grind them to do the incise cutting by just tapping them into the wood. After the channel has been cut tapp the flat wire into the channel, and file flat with the surface of the mood.

There is a good article step by step in Blade Magazine from a month or so ago, a two part article if I remember correctly. It had a lot of good info.
