I have inlaid a silver border in a brass bolster on a cheap folder and now
after I have cleaned it up and polished it getting it ready to cut it I have
lost the contrast of the brass and silver is there something I can use to
dull the shine of the brass so the silver will show better?

One thing I found to do is to put a very shallow cut around the boarder of the silver. Right up against the silver, and then darken it with some black paint. This will make it stand out better.

If you do this, be careful not to go to deep and into your undercut.

Another thing you can do, is age the brass. This can be done with chemicals.

help with brass

I have tried using Vigor antiquing solution but when I wiped it off it was still very
shinny and bright. What I'm trying to do is to dull or break the shine on the brass.

Brass Brush It!

If you brass brush it with a soft brass brissle brush you can change the bright brass finish to a satin finish that looks a little softer. You may want to use a little soap and water on the brass brush as lubrication. I prefer to brass brush it in one direction to maintain consistency in the finish.

help with brass

Thanks everyone for the help.
I brushed it like was recommended and then went one step further
I went into the tips section to where Sam placed a tip on how to
age or antique brass using ammonia except I used household ammonia
and left it over night looked at it this A.M. perfect!!! The silver border
shows up even better than I expected. Now to cut it .
