    Default Appraisal

Is there any way to get an appraisal done to determine an individuals ability to earn a living engraving.

Not sure if that came out right, but we'll see.

    people make a living engraving....
if that is your question... are you wanting to have yourself, or your work appraised, to know if you could make a living at this stuff?

    Yessir,

Interested in seeing exactly where I'm at with this process and if it's worth it to move forward.

Thing is, not really interested in splashing hi-res images of my amaturish work on the internet due to the obvious issues related to trying to recover from that.

It would be a help if your profile showed where you were located.
Hard to give you advise without a picture or being close enough to see your work.

    Hello T. G. lll,
Thank you for revising your profile.
There are some excellent engravers in Oregon.
You will find a listing of them on the www.fega.com forum and also by reading the posts and replies on the Cafe forum.
You could try a Personal Message to Oregon engravers on the Cafe forum to see if they would be willing to look at your stuff.
Or you could email or phone some of the engravers that you find on the FEGA forum.
Each January FEGA holds the Engravers Show in Las Vegas. We hold seminars open to anyone.
When the formal seminars are over there is an open show-and-tell time to get free expert advise from some of the top engravers.
These are some resources worth your time to look into.
Best of luck on your engraving journey.
    John B.

there's a whole lot more to earning a "living" as an engraver than just taking a mere "test" one must master many disciplines just to become proficient. let's say you get good, you then have to market yourself, and develop a professional business attitude. there's so many ways to lose money when one begins. time yourself with everything you do. do not give away your time. doing so will assure ill feeling later, as people will expect cut rate prices. everything that is considered "overhead" must be borne borne by the client. it's tempting, at first, to give away time with a client, drawing time, driving expenses, and etc, etc. you.re giving away money good luck

T.G.III, post what your doing even if it's drawings there are people on here that will give you an honest assessment of where your at. It can be intimidating but most are only trying to help you. There are a couple of trolls on here that come out from under their bridge to trash people but our benevolent dictator shuts them down quickly. Monk, Andrew and Sam Welch have helped me immensely over the years I've been on here. What they say can be hard to hear sometimes but they are right and that's what you need. Engraving is just part of the business if your doing guns polishing and finishing can take up more time than the cutting.
Good luck and post what you do it will help.
    Leland
