I have not posted in some time but have finally completed a coin carving project. The two Morgan silver dollars are threaded to screw into one another with a hobo nickel portrait of Jules Verne contained within.

i know not what the man looks like, but this is just awesomme in all respects. i wouldn't relish the idea of trying to create inner and outer threads to make the two pieces fit so well. curious to know how you achieved that. tyvm for showing.

I borrowed the threads from a watch, but it was still a task. I had to cut the male threads from the watch back down to a ring that fit the channel I made in one coin. The other side involved cutting the threaded section out of the watch frame, sizing it and make it fit into a channel in the other coin. That is the simple explanation but there was an extreme amount of measuring, lathe and milling work, jewelers saw cutting, filing and tweaking to get it right. There would be no way to cut threads like that on my lathe. The tolerance in the watch channels is .001 to .002.

A brilliant masterpiece, Steve! Show some other views if you can, showing how it goes together.

As the kids say, OMG! What an unbelievably creative concept! Masterfully executed. I would love to see this "in the flesh", or better yet, would love to own it.

new images of coins

These images show close ups of how the coin goes together. The male threads are raised above the coin surface but screw into a threaded channel on the opposite coin. the nickel carving is inset and the mechanical design is somewhat recessed so that there is no interference when the two silver dollars screw together.
