Is the decimal thickness to gauge different for nonferrous and ferrous metals as it would be for gold and silver? In other words if .299 is 22 gauge standard for all metals?
Most of the time 22 ga. is .025 thick in my book.I have found some steel is slightly different, maybe it was because it was imported steel sheet. For the most part the steel sheet and nonferrous metals that I have used are the same ga. designations.
Sheet metal gauges for steels are different from non-ferrous metal gauges. Gauges for various steel types (mild, stainless, galvanized) also differ. A Google search for "sheet metal gauge chart" will bring up images of the various gauges and material thickness.
different industries DO use different scales/standards. afaik, jewelers usually stick to Brown & Sharpe (B&S) gage, but sheetmetal workers, punch & die, etc., use a different standard (which escapes me at the moment).
