I do Northwest coast Native style engraving and I would like to recess the background areas about 0.3 MM and have the area smooth enough to engrave a design. I am referring to the areas that are cross-hatched in the attached photograph.

I have not found a method that is efficient. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Pictured ia a milling machine I constructed from an old chop saw, 2 granite surface plates and a micro milling head. One plate is fixed to the bed of the chop saw and the other is free to slide around on it. The Milling head is affixed to where the say motor used to be and a hardened pin is so attached behind the cutter to allow it to ride on the back of the second plate to control the cutter depth I have use a micrometer head. I affix the work to the second stone with double sided tape and observing thru the microscope move the second stone under the cutter. I can remove as little as .001 from the work this way and finish up with the graver in the corners, It is fairly simple to fit a triangle diamond file into my air graver to smoothe the milled surface. The major expense is the milling head (Taig). Hope this helps.
