Masks, grotesques, dolphins, all cleverly hidden in the design...........either that or I'm smoking the wrong thing
F. Knight is one of my favourite engraving artist for doing this type of shading and I still use the Scroll Ornaments Of the Early Victorian Period (Dover) as a reference book
Anyone know if those lines are made one at a time or with a multi liner tool? That imagery is sorta creepy but as an example it probably contains about every shading problem imaginable. Great example of how texture can be translated into two dimensions, not at all hard to imagine what this would feel like,,, where it's smooth, rough, sharp etc.
