i always thought cloisonne had to be "closed cell", with no openings. it appears there are openings in yours. what is the size of this piece? how do you apply heat ? torch or kiln ? curious minds need to know.

Monk we use Kiin at about 1500 degrees, the piece is far from done. Will have transparent enamels over the foils to support the walls. A lot of steps involved, more foil, opaque black for zebras stripes with perhaps shades of grey, technique called grisaille or limoges in a broader sense. You will have to look up those terms. TORCH firing alternative was demonstrated in class bUT I think requires some different skills. The piece is approximately 1 1/2 by the same. I have progressed further and will post with more detail soon. Thanks for asking. I thought it would be interesting for you to watch it progress!

i use a mapp gas torch. some of the techniques i do are very difficult to do in a kiln. a degree or two either side of ideal causes problems. the celtic design shows little" bubbles" in the dark area. over firing in a kiln causes that. the chipmunk was fired by torch. far easier to see the various textural/color changes that way. i now understand what you're doing. the zebra should be a real winner when finished.

The picture of the children riding the zebras is a fake.
They are actually riding on white donkeys with blackish painted stripes.
The face, mouth, ear and body shape are incorrect and belong to a donkey, not a zebra.
While a young jockey I once rode a zebra on a bet. Don't want to do that again !! they bite like hell !!

i remember seeing a zebra in a Ringling Bros* circus some years ago, and if memory serves, the trainer just lead it thru some tricks but nobody actually rode it. probably found out the hard way...

*"The Greatest Show On Earth" is currently on its farewell tour. if it comes to your town this will be the last opportunity to see it!

This is way off the subject of engraving.................
But that's different, that lady is really riding a young zebra. That one looks like it has been hand raised and gentle broken.
Just don't try it with a wild born animal.
They have a natural aversion to things on their back and don't like lions, people or saddles.

Hey Monk how did you enamel that chipmunk
on your piece?

here goes: design robbed off google images-- per customer request. image processed/sized in corel.

a dummy (positioning") image printed on plain paper.

special decal paper cut to fit over dummy image & taped in place.

dummy page with decal taped on and run thru the printer again.
the image is now on the decal select a copper or sterling blank and fire. sometimes a second coat of glass needs applied to even out the surface. light colors of glass are needed for contrast. the image prints dark brown to black.

the printing has to be done on a laser printer using magnetic iron oxide toner. i bought a used hp on the bay for 150 bucks. this printer is dedicated to the glass fusing. the toner is actually used by banks to print magnetic documents and checks. about the only negative to the technique-- it can only print in dark brown to almost pure black.
last-- the decal is carefully trimmed to fit the blank. decal is then soaked in water for a minute or two and very carefully transferred onto the copper or sterling blank. gently pat dry, removing all air bubbles. let decal dry for several hours. then fire.

the technique is stand alone, or can be used in conjunction with other fusing strategies. sounds far more difficult than it actually is. i always print a couple xtra decal images, as when transferring to the glass surface, the decal is quite delicate and prone to tearing.
i might add that you can do your own drawing and scan into corel. printing must be with the magnetic toner or process wont work.
