ok ladies and gentlemen i feel confident to ask for feedback of any kind. i am reallynew at this , but i have logged in some hours engraving and watching and reading tons of videos and books...

so far, have removed nbackground with 120 and 90 degree graver, then used round carbide rotary, then stippled with graver, then black enamel paint

shading next.. but have reservations on what style to use

for a spine of that size, as a single design in the square, i think most of the detailing is way too bold. some of the leaf elements don't flow, or "grow out of the spine", some just thrust out at almost 90 degrees. this shows ( to me) almost no flow to it. the details show little variation, as if they were rubber stamped. learning the design phase of this art can be more frustrating than learning the mechanical aspects of using the graver. books and dvd's are available, as well as a host of free videos. just keep at it !

thanks monk.. needed that.. back to work.

good attitude. the 2 books i advise, are by lee griffiths and shawn didyoung. the 2 show an easy way to learn design concepts. for a beginner, well worth the price.

Artistically it's not very good and I would encourage you to study and learn to draw proper scroll. Then you'll be ready to tackle the shading. I applaud your efforts and appreciate that you post them in the Cafe

thanks everyone.. i bought both griffith and di young products. actually all of them and have been studying. its a marthon for me not a sprint. things take time...

but what a great adventure...

its funny people get bent out of shape with some opinions, but the reality is we have the masters here that we asre interacting with. if i wanted to get mollycoddled i would take a class..

all critique is well received...and motivating actually..
