This one is a challenge. As I think Sam W will attest bulino on a radically curved surface is interesting to say the least. One of the biggest problems is the lighting is only optimum on a very thin area. As the surface curves the light does not show the real values and it requires constant repositioning to evaluate relationships. Alas

I've spent a little time lately looking at banknote and thought I'd incorporate some of those elements into this piece. The obvious name for a melding of several techniques is bankulino but bulinknote sounds kind of fun.

A bit more done. Reading a letter from home in the trench.

Moving on to another panel. I will come back later and possibly tweak some of the values.

Oh My! This is going to be another stunner from that guy putzing out in his garage! I love your "humanizing" the "Great War", not just glorifying conflict. Can't wait to see it finished.

I appreciate the kind and thoughtful comments.

DocMark- You nailed my intention. The topic on top is a war scene but the sides are my attempt to "humanize" the war. On the left is the soldier in the trench reading a letter from home. To the left of the banner will be a mother or wife/girlfriend writing the letter. On the other side is a hospital scene with the young soldier lying in a bed being fed by a Red Cross nurse. I wish the panels were larger but such is the life of an engraver.

Well chosen subject matter for the side panels. It would have been easy, and just fine, to pick some battle scenes but this draws you in to think about the story. I like that the scrolls are sculpted in contrast to the fine bulino. Can't wait to see it!

Left side may be finished. You can tell the story you want. My current version is a mother who is also a Red Cross nurse is writing a letter to her son in the trenches.

Lee,

I am following your work on the Great War pistol with great interest. During the First World War, my father was an NCO who carried a Colt 1911 pistol. He could have well been the dough boy writing the the letter in a trench and could have also been the soldier in the hospital as he suffered a bayonet wound to the abdomen in the battle of Chateau Thierry. Like all your work, this pistol is turning into another creative masterpiece.

My father is pictured below.

Thanks Roger. As DocMark noted I wanted to put a human element into this piece something that people could make personal as you have with your father.
