Hi

In my country power hone is not being sold.

I want to try my own power hone but I can not find enough information about what kind of engine I need.

I know that GRS put two different engine, 115volt and 230volt.

How about the other information like rpm and torque.

For example, will it enough if I use an engine which has 24V - 150rpm - 5nm torque.

Hi SalihKara,

No need to build anything. You can use a regular drill press ("Matkap basın" in Turkish?). See here: https://youtu.be/vFmPOmevEaw?t=247

Also I have saw some russian guy use a Harddisk from a computer for sharpening.
EDIT: I found it : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81iIE6AmwT4&list=PL71txm3XVonVSYT6c5laJfwKoNQ9ekTFr&index=9
I don't know if it works very well but it is cheap.

Any motor/engine will work if it is strong enough to keep turning when you put the graver in the wheel.

Good luck.

I use this motor https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004WK2FPW/ref=pe_175190_21431760_3p_M3T1_ST1_dp_1

From this set of instructions. http://www.engraverscafe.com/showthread.php?15498-Low-speed-bi-directional-6-quot-power-hone

My motor has a 7.5 inches of torque and if I did the conversion correctly yours has about 3.9 foot pounds or plenty of power.

The speed is higher than I use, but I don't think that will be any problem as long as you keep the gravers cool. If they feel warm, keep a glass of water close to cool them down.

Good luck with the project.

How long have you been using this motor ?
Also, can you stop it by your bare hand when it is running ?

I have been using mine for about 2 years with no problems. I can probably stop it with my hand, but have never tried it.

Please forgive my ignorance,

But if you can stop it by your hand, doesn't it mean motor is so weak,

i created one. i used a 12 volt, dc motor. it was originally used as a tape transport in a large computer. i control it with a variable power supply. for rough shaping, i use the drillpress. i use the dc motor unit just for touchup. most any dc motor will work. a good source, at least around here, is the drive motor on an old treadmill. a forum member, ron spokovich, made a hub adaptor to fit the shaft.

Today I ordered a motor and I will try to build a power hone in a few days. If it works I will explain step by step how I built it.

Very interested to see how it turns out. I am currently sharpening by hand. And I dont want to spend any more money on tools and gadgets.

good. the use of a dc motor allows one to easily control the speed. mine is strictly for touchup, and high speed is not an issue. looking forward to seeing your project.

well, to be sure, the old way has worked for a long, long time. the newer ways have a certain "snob appeal", not to mention absolute repeatability. if one wishes to use a variety of geometries, the new way certainly rules. jmho
