Thought I'd share my latest cobbled together doohicky in case someone else was looking for something that performed similarly. A new desk lamp with a large even lighting area (about 9" x 7.5"). I pieced together a 500+ led dimmable panel light meant for photography, made a bracket from aluminum (the white piece) to mount a piece of light diffusing acrylic about an inch from the surface of it (no hot spots what so ever this way, nice even lighting) and mounted it all on an articulating arm meant to hold iPads. Pretty happy with it so far but with new edge lit led technology moving so fast there will probably be something slimmer, lighter and more streamlined on the market soon.
